Go Green With Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent

Ever wonder why it is important to make use of eco friendly laundry detergent ? Well, you will agree  that clothes go to the dryers after laundry. The excess water with dissolved laundry detergents goes into the sewage system where harmful chemicals toxic contained in the detergents contaminate underground water . And unbelievable as it may seem, the laundry room can be one of the most dangerous places inside the house because of the toxic chemicals from detergent spread in the air which can be inhaled by your family. Thus, a lot of research has been dedicated to discover a genuinely eco friendly laundry detergent – genuinely, because not all brands that claim eco friendly actually walk their talk.

Most laundry detergents available today contain phosphates and some surfactants such as nonylphenol ethoxylates. These ingredients were banned in the US in 1970 because these can result to the formation of micelle which impairs the ability of fish to get oxygen from the water.

Unfortunately, unlike foods and drugs, detergent brands are not really required to disclose the chemical ingredients contained in their products. Therefore, a lot of laundry detergents that claim to be environmentally friendly are questionable since labels can easily be manipulated. While there are brands which showcase their seals of approvals from environmental organization such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Design for the Environment Logo, a consumer can never be too sure.

It would help to check EPA's list of safe products from their website to verify the eco friendliness of a certain brand. Also, environment-savvy consumers can check out reviews of green detergents in to find which liquid and powder detergents are suited for baby clothes, delicate fabrics, or even athletic wardrobes.

But then again, to ensure the safety and nature loving quality of a laundry detergent, consumers may opt to make the detergents themselves. Home-made detergents are known for their organic quality, as they are not processed in laboratories and chemical-free. From a bar of soap, half a cup of borax and baking soda, a consumer can have his or her very own homemade eco friendly laundry detergent. The process is simple. Grate the bar of soap into a container and mix with borax and baking soda. Mix well, and the detergent is good to go. One table spoon should be used for mildly soiled clothing, and two tablespoons of powder should be put in the washer for heavily stained clothes.

For liquid  eco friendly laundry detergents, five ounces of cruelty-free deodorant soap can be dissolved in a pot of water with constant stirring with above a heat source. Dissolve a cupful of soda ash or washing soda with the solvent with through stirring, and let it cool. With this simple process, anyone can have a safe and green liquid detergent. A minimum of one fourth cup of this liquid detergent is needed in washing a small volume of clothes.

While these can save a lot of money on laundry detergents, consumers can also help the environment. And with a little innovation, homemade liquid and powder eco friendly laundry detergent products  can jumpstart a business. All you will ever need is love for the environment and a little effort and perseverance.
